"The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin", published by American Book Company, New York and Cincinnati, Special student edition with footnotes and supplements published in 1896. First Edition with '1896' imprinted on the bottom of the title page and copyright.

Hard boards [some wear and soiling: see photos]; green cloth on spine; 5" x 7.1/2"; antique inscriptions, mostly names inside covers and endpapers, 13-page Introduction by the editor; Autobiography + Several Letters to Franklin mentioned in the text; Proverbs from the Poor Richard's Almanac; Franklin's "The Wat to Wealth" -- all together 206 pages + 2-page publisher's list of educational literature, some soiling, a few old pencil marks, good condition.

"The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin" is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography is both an important historical document and Franklin's major literary work. The Autobiography is a major source for exploring Franklin's ideas on wealth and virtue as well as his motivations in pursuing a long life of active civic participation.

Franklin wrote his autobiography in the form of an extended letter to his son. While recording the events of his life, he adds instructions for good living which makes this work America's first "How to Succeed" book.
