Benjamin Harrison Signed Check Engrossed Entirely in His Hand
Signed check

Benjamin Harrison check signed and engrossed in his hand. 6.625" x 2.75"; Indianapolis, Indiana; October 1, 1877. Check drawn on Fletcher & Sharpe's Bank made out to Maurice A. Spohr in the amount of fourteen dollars. Fully engrossed in his hand and signed, "Benj Harrison." Endorsement signature on verso. Irregular cut cancellation with no loss at center right does not affect the signature. Slight offsetting along right, darker on verso.

Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) was a successful Indianapolis lawyer in 1877, the year he signed this check. He had narrowly lost the 1876 Indiana gubernatorial election, but was a rising star in the Republican party. Harrison would soon play an instrumental role as a delegate to the 1880 Republican National Convention, where he helped break a candidate deadlock. His political career continued to ascend: he served as U.S. Senator from Indiana (1881-1887) and was elected as the 23rd President of the United States (1889-1893).

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
