Israel Joseph Benjamin, who styled himself "Benjamin II" after the twelfth century Jewish Explorer Benjamin of Tudela, journeyed extensively in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa before undertaking his travels in the New World. The first volume covers his travels in the Eastern states and his journey to San Francisco, the second volume is dedicated to his time in California, and the third volume, the northwest of North America.
