Bennington Rockingham Brown Glaze Toby Mug, 1840-1860
This is a well known piece of Bennington pottery, made between 1840-1860. The Toby mug, 6" tall, has the classic brown Rockingham glaze, and the subject wears a tri-cornered hat, so the beverage can be poured from either side, or drunk directly, from the front. Modeled after an American patriot, he holds a mug in his right hand, and a pipe in his left. The applied handle has a thumb rest near the top. Has some glaze chips at the heavy, sunken, base, and a chip, glaze chip, inside the rim.
