The four great studies of the Venetian, Florentine, Central Italian, and North Italian painters of the Renaissance are here brought together, providing for the first time a complete survey of Italian Renaissance art from Cimabue to Corregio. Among the painters and sculptors discussed in detail are Giotto, Bellini, Donatello, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Tintoretto, Titian, Velazquez, Veronese, and Verrochio.

Bernard Berenson (1865-1959) was an American art historian specializing in the Renaissance. His book "Drawings of the Florentine Painters" was an international success. Berenson was a major figure in the attribution of Old Masters, at a time when these were attracting new interest by American collectors, and his judgments were widely respected in the art world.
