Bergama
first half 19th century, 123 x 103 cm, North West Anatolia
This small and nearly square rug is from a village in the Bergama region inhabited by Turkmen Yagcibedir. It is very fine in weave using first-rate lustrous pile wool. The high quality is a characteristic feature of these weavings, known as "Kiz" Bergama, which were wedding presents from the bride for her groom. Herrmann has published an analogous example and traces the design back to Transylvanian carpets.
