Bernardus Johannes (Bernard) Blommers (The Hague, January 30, 1845 – there, December 12, 1914) was a Dutch painter. He was one of the younger Dutch painters from the first generation of the Hague School. Bernard Blommers was taught at the Hague Academy by Jozef Israëls and Jacob Maris. He often worked in the Scheveningen and Katwijk area and occasionally also in North Brabant.

He created an untold amount of work from his villa in Scheveningen, and this piece is a wonderful example of that. With its fleeting brush strokes, this preliminary study is a unique and self-contained work that provides a beautiful insight into the working method of a true Hague School master.
