Bernhard Hommola, Germany, mechanical tinplate windmill pull-along toy with animated hammer mechanism, circa 1900–1915, a rare early 20th-century German mechanical carpet toy by Bernhard Hommola, constructed principally in painted tinplate and bearing the maker's distinctive "Ho" trademark beneath a three-towered heraldic device to the green base, the toy takes the form of a Dutch-style windmill mounted upon a rectangular four-wheeled carriage, tapered cream-painted tower is decorated with green landscape detail and a small painted window, beneath a ribbed red tinplate roof surmounted by a red, white and blue flag, to the front is a four-sailed windmill rotor, the broad metal sails painted cream with red lattice decoration, carriage is fitted with four open-spoked metal wheels, painted red with blue detailing, together with its original wire pull handle, mechanical linkage from the travelling wheels operates the windmill assembly so that, when the toy is pulled along, the sails rotate while a pair of weighted hammer or pestle elements mounted to the side of the tower rise and fall in sequence, approximately 250 mm long × 105 mm wide × 250 mm high.* Literature: An unusually engaging and scarce example of Hommola's mechanical toy production, combining the firm's better-known windmill and animated operating-model traditions with a wheeled pull-along format.
