ALS
A pair of items individually signed by Bess and Margaret Truman, including an autograph letter as First Lady and commemorative first day cover. 3pp total, ranging in date from 1952 to 1973. Please see below for further information on contents and condition.
From The Doug Wertman Collection.
The lot includes:
1.) 1p autograph letter on White House stationery signed "Bess W. Truman" as First Lady. Measures 6.25" x 9.25", Washington, D.C., Tuesday, July 22, 1952. Addressed to the couple's close personal friend, Charles Tucker, regarding the health of the President, she writes in part: "I was sorry to miss receiving you and Bob but I felt I was needed here. Harry is much better but I shall stay until he decides to go to Chicago or not." A week before this letter was written, the President came down with an acute viral infection that led to his hospitalization from July 16th thru July 19th. Together with its original mailing envelope, hand addressed by the First Lady. Gentle handling marks and letter folds present, with areas of negligible soiling. Overall, very good.
2.) Commemorative first day cover signed by the President's daughter, "Margaret Truman", along the upper margin. Measures 6.5" x 3.75", postmarked from Independence, MO, May 8, 1973. Issued for what would have been Truman's 89th birthday, the cover features an in memoriam cachet and 8-cent postage stamp. Marginal surface toning and edge wear, else near fine.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
