The fictional book traces an Illinois town’s infatuation with bicycles with a focus on one family in particular, of which Betsey Jane is the matriarch. Throughout the story, the family negotiates issues of the day, including whether women should be allowed to cycle, and if so, what should they wear? (One chapter is dedicated entirely to the divisive subject of bloomers). Here, Betsey Jane unabashedly cruises past a crowd of shocked faces to announce that the book is available to purchase for just 25 cents.
