Biedermeier writing desk

Circa 1830/35. Made in softwood with walnut veneer, of freestanding form, with 9 drawers at the front, a fall front and sliding top, with a veneered and marquetry decorated fitted interior in various fine woods such as ash, cherry, maple and burl thuya, with columns creating an architectural style, with 6 interior drawers, and 2 secret compartments locking by means of a spring mechanism, each with 3 interior drawers. Ca. 120 x 129.5 x 65 cm. In cared-for condition, with a fine patina and corresponding ageing and wear. 1 lock plate missing. (MIN)

Judging by the work on the drawers (dovetails, casket-like drawer bases and the contouring around the edges), we can assume that this desk was produced as a qualifying piece for a master craftsman.
