Bijar
early 20th century, 205 x 138 cm, North West Persia, Kurdistan
Bijar rugs featuring this memorable design – confronting, rampant heraldic lions snarling at each other as well as large serrated leaves, grapes and calyx flowers within a lattice of ogival compartments formed by red vines – were usually woven in the dozar format, like this perfectly preserved example. They were produced in the late Qajar period, in the time frame from circa 1880 – 1920. The design probably derives from European fabrics of the Renaissance style. A heavy, high-piled carpet of outstanding quality.
Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Robert A. Fischer. Richmond 1985, no. 12 *** RIPPON BOSWELL Wiesbaden, A 104, 3 June 2023, lot 147 *** BESIM, ADIL (publ.), Mythos und Mystik, volume 2. Alte und antike Textilkunst. Vienna 1999, no. 45
