Bijov Sumakh
second half 19th century, 295 x 114 cm, East Caucasus, Kuba
This sumakh from the Kuba region features a Bijov field design that occurs in almost identical form in the pile rugs of the provenance. However, the flatweaving technique makes the design of this sumakh appear more square and angular. The rare main border displays palmettes, Talish rosettes, blossoms, leaves and abstract animals.
BENNETT, IAN, Teppiche der Welt. Munich 1982, p. 255
RIPPON BOSWELL, A 56, 19 May 2001, lot 131
Condition
Corroded black areas rewoven in places. Original sides and finishes. A few small rewoven areas. A restored tear in the upper right side. Good overall condition.
