Bilal
Bilal ENKI BILAL The Phalanges of the Black Order, Dargaud 1979 Original plate no. 58, previously published in Pilote Mensuel no. 57, January 1979. Signed. India ink on paper 38.3 × 49.7 cm (15.08 × 19.57 in.) *Les Phalanges de l'Ordre Noir*, written by Pierre Christin, left an indelible mark on the history of comics of its era. First published in *Libération*, this graphic novel sounds the death knell for the confrontation between the two major ideologies of the 20th century: fascism and communism. But this comic book would not be nearly as powerful without Enki Bilal’s artwork. In the late 1970s, he broke free from a certain Franco-Belgian realism through a distinctly pictorial approach dominated by textures, grays, and faces sculpted by fatigue. Bilal’s sensitive and visceral artwork conveys the end of a world even before the narrative states it, transforming the ruins of ideologies into a twilight aesthetic of unprecedented power.
