Bill Binnings (American/Louisiana, 20th c.) , "Movement from 5th Position", bronze, signed on self-base, unique cast, h. 25 3/4 in., w. 21 in., d. 15 in., granite base, overall h. 33 3/4 in . Provenance: Acquired from the artist, c. 1980s Note: Bill Binnings, known for his impressive bronze sculptures, dedicated himself to the tricky medium after receiving his MFA from Ohio State in 1971. Binnings completes all of his own casting in his studio-foundry on the Northshore of New Orleans, and his public commissions can be found throughout the South. Recently, Binnings completed and sited two commissioned sculptures of the author, Walker Percy, in locations around Covington, LA to honor his late friend. In the lot offered here, Binning’s gift for conveying movement and grace is well on display. Entitled “Movement from 5th Position,” the bronze depicts a ballerina precariously balanced on one leg. The fluid lines of the figure paired with the sculpture’s modernist style enhance the elegance of the dancer.Neal Auction Company would like to thank Mr. Binnings for his assistance with the cataloguing of these lots.
