Billy Pate Anti-Reverse Fly Reel

[ translate ]

A 3 3/8" diameter, 3/4" wide spool reel built for right-hand wind only, with a dial drag adjustment under the handle. Serial numbered D9 on the gold anodized frame, an Ex used condition reel spooled with a WF-9-F line and backing, and coming in a suede reel case.

Owned by the late Walter Winship Ungermann, who led a life most anglers can only dream of, traveling the world while pursuing his passion for all things involving a rod and reel.

The Boston born Ungermann began fishing before his 9th birthday, excelling at the sport even then, with broad interests that encompassed both salt and fresh-water fishing. While still in his teens, Ungermann operated his own charter business, a career that lasted 45 years, while exploring his home waters of Nantucket Sound for Blues and Stripers, and traveling south to Florida in the winter to chase Billfish, Dolphin and Wahoo.

Expanding his talents to fly fishing, found him traveling the world to angling destinations such as Iceland, England, Sweden, Norway, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Australia and numerous other locals, adventures that quickly caught the attention of major angling retailers such as Orvis and Thomas & Thomas, each offering Ungermann sponsorships and utilizing his skill as a field tester for new equipment.

His list of achievements is as impressive as it is extensive, with multiple Jackson Hole One Fly victories as an individual competitor and numerous top ten finishes as a member of Team USA, a first-place finish in the Nantucket Anglers Club Billfish Tournament, as well as guiding his fellow anglers in casting competitions as the Captain of the US Fly Fishing team and acting as the Chairman of the US Youth Flyfishing Team.
