Bada Shanren was born during the Ming dynasty period in the Jiangxi province of China, where he cultivated a talent for drawing and calligraphy with the help of his father. In 1644 Bada was forced to flee from his elite status due to the Manchu army overthrowing the Ming dynasty. In fear for his life he changed his name and ended up in a monastery as a Buddhist monk, where his isolation and pessimism found its way into his works. Although a unfortunate reality Bada became one of the most important artists in Chinese history.
