Bjørn Wiinblad Studio Glazed Ceramic Signed Covered Tureen, 1957 Early Important Offered for sale is an early and important example of the work of Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad dated 1957. This tureen is whimsical with a peaked lid and applied details which allow for gripping the lid. The piece is hand painted and properly marked on the base. Bjørn Wiinblad was a Danish painter and ceramicist known for his whimsical illustrations and carefully designed household objects. Wiinblad was considered an admired creative talent in his native country and he is widely collected worldwide. Born on September 20, 1918 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He worked extensively with the Nymolle and Rosenthal pottery companies, designing a commemorative annual Christmas plate for the latter in 1971. His illustrations for Hans Christian Anderson’s The Swineherd won an award from the American Library Association, and were made into an animated short in 1986. He was awarded the American-Scandinavian Foundation’s Cultural Prize in 1995, with his works held in collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Copenhagen. Wiinblad died on June 8, 2006 in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark at the age of 87.
