Just like its other colored representatives, black opals occur as spherical to nodular masses without a recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty is usually only revealed when they are sanded. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which manifests itself in an intense rainbow shimmer. In addition, the bedrock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.
