Black lacquer, diamond and coral compact, Cartier and a lipstick holder, 1920s

The compact applied with black lacquer, the thumb piece set with rose-cut diamonds and a coral baton, opening to reveal a mirror, a powder and a brush compartment, measurements approximately 75 x 55 x 18mm,signed Cartier, numbered, French assay for gold and maker's marks, case stamped Cartier; the lipstick holder of similar design, signed Van Cleef & Arpels, numbered, French assay mark for gold and maker's marks, pouch unsigned.

Compact: signed CARTIER PARIS, MADE IN FRANCE. French assay marks for 18 carat gold, thumbpiece tested as platinum. French maker's marks and numbered 1923. Mirror slightly loose in frame. Lacquer loss to the thumbpiece. Lipstick holder: signed VAN CLEEF & ARPELS, French assay marks for gold and numbered 5099. Both objects with light scratches to the lacquer and minor tarnish and scratch to gold commensurate with age and use. Overall in good condition and well preserved. Total gross weight approximately 185 grams. Compact measuring approximately 76 x 54mm. Case stamped Cartier.
