Blackwell, Elizabeth (1821-1910) Autograph Letter Signed, Rock House, Hastings, 21 March 1891. Laid watermarked bifolium and single wove sheet inscribed over five pages to Dr. Blackwell's niece Alice Stone Blackwell (1857-1950), regarding her brother George Blackwell's (1832-1912) management of Elizabeth's real estate investments in Orange, New Jersey, and mentioning important issues, "I shall be so glad to learn that your dear Mother cut loose from persons with whom she cannot be in full sympathy and fight more on her own hand by means of the Woman's Journal and independent action"; "Although I strictly maintain my position as a physician, I do utterly repudiate the stupidity of vivisection and other immoralities that are let loose by cliques in the Profession, so that I give blow after blow, as hard as I can --but always professionally-- and I have many evidences that they are not given in vain"; and notably, "Often too I can say a word of warning about that wretched Mrs. Stanton, who does apparently all she can to discredit suffrage by her antagonism to marriage and public morality. Fortunately her doings in England require no reference to her American antecedents-- her attacks on Miss Helen Taylor, her defence of Parnell, and her written utterances speak for themselves. But her influence here is mischievous just as far as it goes-- which happily is not very far"; the bifolium splitting into four vertical strips along old folds, full transcription available upon request, 10 1/4 x 8 1/2 in. and 8 1/4 x 4 1/4 in.
