Blaine Logan Ribbon
Silk political ribbon for the “BLAINE AND LOGAN” ticket. Blue background with flowers and Blaine and Logan in red. 2-1/4”x9”. Very good condition. The Blaine and Logan ticket represented the Republican Party in the highly contentious U.S. presidential election of 1884. The ticket paired James G. Blaine, a charismatic former Speaker of the House and Secretary of State from Maine, with John A. Logan, a prominent Union Army general and U.S. Senator from Illinois. The campaign became infamous for intense personal attacks, mudslinging, and corruption scandals rather than substantive policy debates. Ultimately, the ticket lost a razor-thin election to Democratic nominees Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks, largely because a faction of reform-minded Republicans known as "Mugwumps" abandoned Blaine due to questions about his integrity, leaving the Republicans with 182 electoral votes to the Democrats' 219.
