The mineral topaz is an island silicate with the chemical composition Al2[6] [(F,OH) 2|Si. O4] . [3] The fluorine (F) and hydroxide ions (OH) indicated in the round brackets can represent each other in the formula (substitution, diadochy) , but are always in the same proportion to the other components of the mineral. An F-free OH analogue is known as a synthetic compound. [7]
Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and usually develops well-formed and sometimes very large-area crystals with a short to long prismatic or columnar habit and a glass-like shine on the surfaces. In its pure form it is colorless and transparent. Due to multiple refraction of light due to lattice construction defects or polycrystalline formation, it can also appear white and, due to foreign admixtures, take on a yellow, pink-red to brown-red, violet, light blue and light green color, with the transparency decreasing accordingly.
