Bokhara Suzani
first half 19th century, 147 x 111 cm, Central Asia, South West Uzbekistan
A Bokhara suzani in the nim format composed of three panels. Basma stitch is used for the motifs and ilmoq stitch, for the outlines. The Nurata design includes four diagonal flowering shrubs that grow from the corners towards the centre of the field. Instead of a central motif, it shows a yellow blossoming shrub on the right and a blue vase with a shrub growing from it on the left, as well as two smaller flowering plants placed between them. The wide border comprises diamonds made up of light green leaves embellished with a great variety of circular and star-shaped blossoms, plants shown in side view and floral stems. The bright and transparent colours make this suzani appear light and elegant. Date of purchase: 2005
Condition
The foundation is slightly stained. Otherwise in good condition. Backed with fabric. Velcro along the upper finish and right side.
