It contains an edition of the oldest court records of the Kraków region from 1394–1400, that is, records of judicial practice from the early years of Władysław Jagiełło’s reign. The source text is in Latin, and the preface is in Polish. The first part of the volume (1884) was published in Kraków in 1884. The entire series comprises twelve volumes in fifteen parts; its earlier volumes were edited by, among others, Antoni Zygmunt Helcel (vol. 2, 1870) and Michał Bobrzyński (vol. 6, 1881), while vol. 9 from 1889 was edited by Franciszek Piekosiński.

Bolesław Ulanowski was born on August 1, 1860, in Brest-on-the-Bug, and died on September 27, 1919, in Kraków. He studied philosophy and law at the Jagiellonian University; in 1881, he earned a doctorate in philosophy, and in 1883, he studied in Paris—including at the École des Chartes—where he honed his skills in paleography and diplomatics. He defended his doctoral dissertation in law on February 25, 1886, under the supervision of Michał Bobrzyński, and on March 8, 1886, he received his habilitation in the history of Polish law. In 1888, he became an associate professor of canon law, in 1890 he became a full professor of canon law and the history of Polish law, and he served twice as dean of the Faculty of Law (1893–94 and 1899–1900). He was a member of the Academy of Learning from 1888 and served as its secretary general from 1901 (officially from 1903). Stanisław Estreicher considered him one of the greatest scholars among Polish historians and lawyers, and he was regarded as a leading paleographer and expert on medieval Polish archival records.

Provenance: a piece without ownership inscriptions or institutional seals.

A must-have for legal historians and medievalists, researchers of Kraków’s history, and collectors of 19th-century source publications from the Academy of Learning. A fundamental source edition consulted by researchers of medieval Lesser Poland.
