MATTHIEU BONHOMME
LUCKY LUKE (AS SEEN BY...)
Lucky Luke’s Long March,
Lucky Comics 2026
Original illustration created for the endpapers.
Signed. India ink on paper
70 × 51 cm (27.56 × 20.08 in.)
Matthieu Bonhomme draws on the conventions of endpapers as conceived by the great classic authors of Franco-Belgian comics. We thus see Lucky Luke and the Daltons in an image structured around two axes: horizontal—at the top and bottom—and vertical—on the right and left. Along each of these axes, Lucky Luke and the Daltons face off—both head-on and in profile—in alternating positions: lying down, standing, on horseback… Matthieu Bonhomme treats us to a true visual feast, topped off with remarkable inking. An iconic image.
“For the title page of the first album, I reworked Morris’s famous drawing of Lucky Luke performing acrobatics with his pistol. In the second, he was shooting while performing acrobatics on Jolly Jumper. For the third, I wanted to include the Daltons. When the book went to press, I cropped some of these scenes, but without fundamentally altering these face-to-face compositions.” M.B.
