Book cases containing a collection of plaster casts (2) - Wood, plaster, leather, paper - 19th century

A pair of book-shaped cases from Collezione Musei. The cases are made of marbled wood and are double-sided, bound in contemporary parchment, with the back in leather with gold-coloured engravings and labels in red morocco leather. Volume no. 5 contains 29 casts, Volume no. 6 contains 27 casts for a total of 56 plaster casts in relief of different shapes and sizes depicting cameos, from classical sculpture to Canova, of the following collections: Capitol Museum, Vatican Museum, Canova Works, Thorwaldsen Works, Naples Museum, and monuments of various places. These two book-shaped cases are the work of master sculptor Giovanni Liberotti, a nineteenth-century Roman engraver of gems, specializing in making these boxes in Rome as a souvenir of the Grand Tour. On the front covers of the two cases there are some missing parts due to their age. Volume no. 5 has signs of wear on the 2 sides of the cover. Volume no. 6 has some colour deficiencies on one of the sides of the cover. The plaster casts are intact. The books measure: 26x18x4. 5 cm
