As a student of August Gaul, Max Esser advanced to the leading animal plastic artists of the Pfeiffer era. He first began his career in the workshops of Schwarzburg, before moving on to a career as a free artist for the manufacture in Meissen from 1919 onwards for the following three years. Furthermore, he kept a so-called Master atelier there from 1923 onwards. Esser produced more than 100 models for the manufacture. In order to craft plastic arts as naturalistically as possible his studies regularly led him to the Berlin zoo.
Max Esser created two versions of the resting elephant. One without cylindrical attachment on the back, the other, like the model presented here, with a small cylinder for the installation of a large, flat bowl.
