Catalogue Note:
Born in Sana’a, Yemen, in 1969, Boushra Yahya Almutawakel studied in the US and Yemen, obtaining a BS in International Business at the American University in Washington, D.C. Boushra expanded her interest in photography while working as a photojournalist on the university newspaper, yearbook, and as a photo lab assistant at the School of Communications. On her return to Yemen in 1994, she worked mainly as an educational adviser but continued developing her photographic work, participating in many group exhibitions.

“I first started the series on the hijab/veil while attending photography school, where I attended a lecture by the Egyptian feminist writer Nawal Elsadawi. At that lecture she said that she felt that women who wore the hijab/veil or nigab were the same as women who wore makeup in the sense that they all hid their true identities. I thought that was a fascinating perspective, and so decided to interpret this photographically. I wasn’t planning on creating a body of work on the topic.”

“The artist is exploring the veil’s many faces in an ongoing photographic series – Mother, Daughter And Doll, shows Almutawakel and her eldest daughter, Shaden Yaqoub, in increasingly covered-up dress” The Guardian, 17 May 2013, Pictures of the week

Prints from this series have been acquired by the British Museum in London, The Museum of Fine Arts of Boston, the Barjeel Foundation in Dubai, as well as by other private collectors.

The Guardian, 17 mai 2013, Pictures of the week.
