Brendel “Secale” Educational Botanical Model, ca. 1900

An educational botanical model depicting a rye flower (Secale cereale), greatly enlarged and opened to reveal its internal structure. The various floral parts are modeled and polychromed, with stamens, glumes, and spikelet elements rendered in an educational manner. The entire piece is mounted on two black rods with turned elements and a circular base made of blackened wood. The original label on the base bears the designation “Secale cereale” as well as information regarding germination. The model is attributed to R. Brendel Co., a company specializing in the manufacture of botanical models for educational purposes.
