Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (September 8, 1828 - February 24, 1914).
A professor at Bowdoin College, J. L. Chamberlain was a Union officer in the Civil War, reaching the rank of Brevet Major General. His service and leadership of the 20th Maine Regiment in the Battle of Gettysburg earned him a Medal of Honor. After the war, he served as Governor of Maine for 4 terms, and then as president of the Bowdoin College for over a decade.
