69055: British School (18th Century) Sir Charles Pole

British School (18th Century) Sir Charles Pole, 1st Baronet, as commander of HMS Cormorant Oil on canvas 24 x 18 inches (61.0 x 45.7 cm) PROVENANCE: Sir W. Hamilton, K.B.; His sale: Christie's, London, June 8-10, 1809, lot 67 (as Portrait of Captain Charles Morice Pole); Private collection, Cleveland, Ohio; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Following his service on the gunship HMS Rippon during the American Revolutionary War in 1778, Pole was promoted to the rank of commander aboard the HMS Cormorant, a sloop tasked with transportation of military dispatches. Pole was promoted to captain the following year, eventually achieving the rank of Admiral of the Fleet.

Condition Report: Unlined canvas. An approximately 4 x 1 inch patch applied to reverse of canvas at center of left side; vertical crack appears on front of canvas at this area. Minor frame abrasion and faint stretcher bar marks visible at edges. Slight undulation to the canvas in upper right corner. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure. Mild surface dust. Not examined out of frame.
Under UV: heavily applied varnish fluoresces green unevenly. Finely applied retouching to address craquelure. Some brushy retouching to corners.
