William was the eldest son of Thomas and Ann (née Matson). He married Lydia Marriott, daughter of the Rev'd James Marriott, Rector of Horsmonden.
When he died in 1874, he left £200 for the school in Lamberhurst which was augmented by the family and allowed for the addition of a second storey to the school and the clock tower.
