pencil and watercolour on paper, indistinctly signed 'L. Gordon [?]' verso, inscribed and dated as titled (lower centre), 20.5 x 28.3 cm.
Note:
John Whitelocke (1757-1833) was appointed commander of an expedition to seize Buenos Aires from Spanish control in 1807. The failure of the attack incurred heavy losses on the British side, and resulted in the surrender of the British forces, for which Whitelocke was brought before a court-martial at Chelsea Royal Hospital. Whitelocke was found guilty of all but one charge, and was subsequently dismissed from service.
