Bronze Of Scylla of Megara

[ translate ]

Scylla was the daughter of king Nisus. Her father's city was under attack by king Minos of Crete. Scylla fell madly in love with Minos. Nisus had a magic lock of hair, which made defeat of his city impossible. The art depicted here, is Scylla's theft of her father's lock of hair, which she gave to Minos. Nisus was defeated and killed. Although Minos was indebted to Scylla for his victory, he left her behind on his return voyage home to his kingdom. Her treachery made him fearful. Scylla tried to swim to catch Minos's boat; her father's ghost drowned her. A classic Greek tragedy. The plinth is lathe turned black slate, with a bronze center section; depicting putti as a philosopher, wrestlers, dancer, musician and astrologers. Weighs 18 pounds. No signature found.

10" x 28"

Condition: Small bruise to top slate section. The one foot attachment is secure. A very heavy plinth, requires support when moving the art. Some spots of wear to patina, easy to retouch with potassium sulfide. For its age being around 1900, it is in very good condition. New hardware at the bottom of the plinth was recently added, for a secure mounting of the one foot attachment.
