The Brooklyn Bridge was designed by German-born engineer John A. Roebling, with construction beginning in 1870. The Brooklyn Bridge was the world's longest suspension bridge ever constructed up until that time. 21st U.S. President Chester A. Arthur and other dignitaries attended the opening ceremonies on May 24, which culminated in the symbolic hand-shaking of the Mayors of Manhattan and Brooklyn, Franklin Edson and Seth Low. Celebrations included fireworks displays, ship gun salutes, speeches, and band music. It's estimated that over 150,000 pedestrians and 1,800 vehicles crossed the bridge on opening day.

William Henry Paine (1828-1890) worked as an assistant engineer for the Brooklyn Bridge, in charge of the large cable railway that serviced the project. He previously served in the Army of the Potomac as a topographical engineer.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
