Bruce Conner (American, 1933-2008), Green Line, 1965 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Bruce Conner (American, 1933–2008) was a Kansas-born artist associated with the San Francisco Beat scene and later recognized as a major figure in postwar American assemblage, film, drawing, printmaking, and conceptual art. Known for dark, densely layered imagery and for challenging conventional ideas of authorship, signature, and reproduction, Conner worked across media in ways that blurred the boundaries between image, object, and mark-making. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Green Line, 1965, is a color lithograph printed in green on pale pink wove paper. The composition extends across the horizontal sheet as a loose network of irregular contours, with branching lines and compact knots of ink suggestinga map. Signed in graphite and marked with the artist’s thumbprint verso lower right, alongside the number “1290,” a Tamarind workshop blindstamp, and an additional circular chop. Inscribed “NR 17” verso upper left, with an additional graphite notation along the right edge. Sheet measures approximately 23.5 x 15 inches. Overall good appearance. The sheet shows light toning with minor handling, small losses along the lower edge, and a narrow paper remnant attached near the lower edge verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
