Bruce Conner (American, 1933-2008), Untitled, 1965 Abstract Tamarind Lithograph

[ translate ]

Bruce Conner (American, 1933–2008) was a Kansas-born artist associated with the San Francisco Beat scene and later recognized as a major figure in postwar American assemblage, film, drawing, printmaking, and conceptual art. Known for dark, densely layered imagery and for challenging conventional ideas of authorship, signature, and reproduction, Conner worked across media in ways that blurred the boundaries between image, object, and mark-making. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

"Untitled" is a 1965 lithograph in gray-black on wove paper, published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Inc., Los Angeles. The image is built from a dense field of black and gray marks, with scratched lines, smudged tonal areas, and clustered shapes spread across the sheet. Rather than a conventional pencil signature, Conner used his thumbprint as an identifying mark, a gesture consistent with his conceptual approach to authorship. Back of sheet with artist’s thumbprint, Tamarind publisher’s stamps, “Tam Imp” inscription, and Tamarind number 1286. Tamarind Impression aside from the numbered edition of 20. Sheet measures approximately 14.5 x 12.25 inches. Condition shows light toning and handling wear, deckled edges, old hinge tape on the back upper corners, and pencil inventory markings. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
