Bruce Conner (American, 1933-2008), Untitled, 1965 Lithograph
Bruce Conner (American, 1933–2008) was a Kansas-born artist associated with the San Francisco Beat scene and later recognized as a major figure in postwar American assemblage, film, drawing, printmaking, and conceptual art. Known for dark, densely layered imagery and for challenging conventional ideas of authorship, signature, and reproduction, Conner worked across media in ways that blurred the boundaries between image, object, and mark-making. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Untitled, 1965, is a lithograph printed in black on cream wove paper. The composition spreads across the horizontal sheet as a cluster of densely worked organic forms, with layered bands of radiating line surrounding dark central cavities and an isolated rounded form at the right. Signed in graphite and marked with the artist’s thumbprint verso lower right, alongside the number “1291,” a Tamarind workshop blindstamp, and an additional circular chop. Inscribed “2-118” verso upper left. Sheet measures approximately 20 x 11.875 inches. Overall good appearance. The sheet shows light toning with minor handling. Two small remnants of mounting tape appear near the upper corners verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
