Bruce Conner (American, 1933-2008), Mandala, 1965 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Bruce Conner (American, 1933–2008) was a Kansas-born artist associated with the San Francisco Beat scene and later recognized as a major figure in postwar American assemblage, film, drawing, printmaking, and conceptual art. Known for dark, densely layered imagery and for challenging conventional ideas of authorship, signature, and reproduction, Conner worked across media in ways that blurred the boundaries between image, object, and mark-making. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Mandala, 1965, color lithograph in ochre yellow and black on cream wove paper, published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop. A square black field is filled with tightly packed, maze-like marks arranged around a large central disk, smaller orbiting circles, and broad concentric bands, giving the image the appearance of a cosmic diagram. Verso signed in graphite beneath an inked thumbprint and inscribed “1266,” with the Tamarind bell blindstamp and a circular printer’s blindstamp at lower right. Sheet measures approximately 18 × 17.5 inches; image measures approximately 14.625 × 14.5 inches. The sheet shows light toning with tape remnants along the upper verso and minor handling wear; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
