Bruce Conner (American, 1933-2008), Untitled, 1965 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Bruce Conner (American, 1933–2008) was a Kansas-born artist associated with the San Francisco Beat scene and later recognized as a major figure in postwar American assemblage, film, drawing, printmaking, and conceptual art. Known for dark, densely layered imagery and for challenging conventional ideas of authorship, signature, and reproduction, Conner worked across media in ways that blurred the boundaries between image, object, and mark-making. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Untitled, 1965, color lithograph in warm buff-tan ink on cream wove paper, printed and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. The rectangular image is filled with an intricate network of narrow white channels running through the tan ground, creating a dense, irregular pattern resembling wood grain or a maze.Marked at lower right with Conner’s blue ink thumbprint above the graphite inscription “Tamarind imp.” and bearing the Tamarind workshop blindstamp nearby. “Tamarind imp.” identifies this as an impression retained by the workshop rather than one from the numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 20.125 × 17.25 inches. The sheet shows light overall toning, minor handling wear, and old tape remnants on the upper verso; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
