Bruce Russell (American, 1903-1963) A Tisket, A Tasket, A Red and Yellow Basket, Los Angeles Times newspaper cartoon, circa 1956 India ink, lithographic crayon and gouache on heavyweight paper 20 x 14-1/2 inches (50.8 x 36.8 cm) (image) Artist applied label lower right Bruce Russell joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1927 as a sports cartoonist and became the newspaper's lead editorial cartoonist in 1934, a position he held to his death in 1963. His work was syndicated by the Times and appeared in newspapers throughout the country. Mr. Russell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1946. In this original a boyish Prime Minister Ichiro Hatoyama of Japan sports an "I'm for You" button and smilingly faces Uncle Sam, representing America's defense commitment to Japan. However, Hatoyama coyly conceals his thoughts for improved relations with the USSR and People's Republic of China, labeled "Japan-Russia-Red China Trade Idea." P. M. Hatoyama led his country for two years from 1954 to 1956, and in October 1956 restored diplomatic relations with the USSR. Japan was under the protection of the USA, and his leadership led to concerns of a weakening of the united front against the communist states of the Soviet Union and Red China.
