Bruce Russell (American, 1903-1963) Does Your Cigarette Taste Different Lately?, Los Angeles Times newspaper cartoon, October 8, 1944 India ink on heavyweight paper 15-3x4 x 12-3x4 inches (40.0 x 32.4 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Bruce Russell Bruce Russell joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1927 as a sports cartoonist. He became the newspaper's lead editorial cartoonist in 1934, a position he held to his death in 1963. His work was syndicated by the Times and appeared in newspapers throughout the country. Mr. Russell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1946. President Franklin D. Roosevelt found himself up against "A Fighting Dewey" in his 1944 campaign for a fourth term. Does Your Cigarette Taste Different Lately? appeared in the October 8, 1944 edition of the Los Angeles Times alongside an editorial that began: "For those who like their campaigns without paddling or pussyfooting, Gov. Dewey's speech at Charleston last night is respectfully commended." Republican Thomas E. Dewey was on the offensive from the beginning of the campaign, yet the President prevailed at the ballot box on election day. The title of this cartoon was drawn from an advertising tagline for Raleigh cigarettes; FDR went through a pack+ a day of Camels, invariably held in a 2.5" cigarette holder. Bruce Russell inscribed this original "To Murray Harris with best regards" above his signature. HID03101062020 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.comxTexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
