Bruce Russell (American, 1903-1963) Horses, Horses, Horses, Los Angeles Times newspaper cartoon, October 2, 1944 India ink and gouache on heavyweight paper 17-1/4 x 12 inches (43.8 x 30.5 cm) (image) Artist applied label lower left Bruce Russell joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1927 as a sports cartoonist. He became the newspaper's lead editorial cartoonist in 1934, a position he held to his death in 1963. His work was syndicated by the Times and appeared in newspapers throughout the country. Mr. Russell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1946. As President Franklin D. Roosevelt campaigned for reelection in 1944, his rhetoric veered away from the national unity called for by World War II to partisan acrimony. Horses, Horses, Horses was published on October 2, 1944, a speech to the Teamsters Union on September 23. In an editorial alongside this cartoon the Times' Sherman Anderson wrote of "the sarcasm, the ridicule, the resentment and...the insults which the President heaped upon the heads of not only those who oppose him politically, but anyone who dares to hold a political belief at odds with his own." This is a handsome, intricately drawn original that includes a classic portrait of the confident FDR, cigarette holder between his teeth. This original is signed and inscribed in the bottom margin by the artist: "To Murray A. Harris with my best wishes Bruce Russell."
