Bruce Russell (American, 1903-1963) The Great Open Space, Los Angeles Times newspaper cartoon, November 7, 1952 India ink, blue pencil, lithographic crayon, and gouache on heavyweight paper 19 x 13-3x4 inches (48.3 x 34.9 cm) (image) Artist's label applied lower right Bruce Russell joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1927 as a sports cartoonist. He became the newspaper's lead editorial cartoonist in 1934, a position he held to his death in 1963. His work was syndicated by the Times and appeared in newspapers throughout the country. Mr. Russell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1946. Certainly, there were many thoughtful persons in the United States who considered the end of the "New Deal - Fair Deal Era" as a milestone in the life of the country and in their own lives. In 1952, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected to the presidency. Among "U.S. Cartoonists" it seems likely none expressed it better than Bruce Russell in this self-portrait in his office at the Los Angeles Times building, seated at his drawing board and pondering a blank canvas. The Great Open Space was published on November 7, 1952, three days after the election brought to a close twenty years of Democratic Party occupancy of the White House spanning the depths of the Great Depression, World War II, the beginning of the Cold War, transition to a peacetime economy, and the Korean War.
