Bruce Russell (American, 1903-1963) When A 'Fell
Bruce Russell (American, 1903-1963) When A 'Feller' Needs A Friend, Los Angeles Times newspaper cartoon, December 26, 1947 India ink, lithographic crayon, and gouache on heavyweight paper 16-1x2 x 12-3x4 inches (41.9 x 32.4 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Bruce Russell Bruce Russell joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1927 as a sports cartoonist. He became the newspaper's lead editorial cartoonist in 1934, a position he held to his death in 1963. His work was syndicated by the Times and appeared in newspapers throughout the country. Mr. Russell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1946. This is a touching original cartoon. It was likely intended as a reminder to President Truman of the legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt, yet it also conveys a gentler message—that the rich and powerful love their pets just like regular folks do. Fala, a Scottish Terrier, was America's most famous White House pet. He came to live with President Franklin and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in November 1940; he traveled with the first couple, was referenced by both and frequently mentioned in the media. In When A 'Feller' Needs A Friend, published on December 26, 1947, Fala gazes upon the "new White House Pup"—Feller, a Cocker Spaniel puppy, who was gifted to President Harry S. Truman on Christmas, 1947. Truman, however, was not a pet lover and gave the dog to his personal physician. Fala outlived FDR by seven years, living with Mrs. Roosevelt at Val-Kill to 1952. According to the former first lady she was "someone to put up with until the master should return." Fala attended FDR's funeral, is buried in the Rose Garden at Hyde Park near the graves of the President and Mrs. Roosevelt, and is depicted in a bronze statue of the President in the FDR Memorial in Washington D.C.
