Bruno Caruso, (Italian, 1927–2018)
"The Octopus Fishermen," ink wash on paper, signed lower right. Dimensions: 55 x 28 cm.
Notes: Certified on the back. Label from the Il Torcoliere Gallery in Rome
Our drawing is the original used to print the lithograph “Pescatori di Polpi”
Bruno Caruso (1927–2018) was a major 20th-century Sicilian painter, draftsman, printmaker, and writer.
Created in the mid-1950s (around 1955–1957), this scene is fully representative of the Italian Neorealist period.
Founded in Rome in the 1950s, Il Torcoliere (which means “the wine press” in Italian) was not merely a gallery. It was one of Italy’s most prestigious printmaking studios and art publishing centers.
It was precisely here that Bruno Caruso collaborated to publish his most famous portfolios of Neorealist engravings in the mid-1950s (notably his 1955 series).
