Buddha. Burma, Ava kingdom, 17th century.
Buddha. Burma, kingdom of Ava, XVII century.
Bronze.
Green black patina.
Good condition for its age.
Measurements: 46 x 24 x 13,5 cm.
Bronze of quality and fineness in the chiseling and the harmonic anatomical modeling. It represents Buddha performing the Bhumisparsha gesture. The figure adopts the posture of the lotus flower, while sitting on a throne whose shape and chiseling is inspired by the lotus flower (symbol of purity). He performs the mudra symbolizing that he takes the earth as his witness. We can identify numerous lakshana, iconographic symbols that identify the Buddhas. The first we see is the bun hairstyle, symbol of meditation, of spiritual life (with the Ushnisha inspired by a stupa). Together with the half-closed eyes, a serene face is completed by the sketched smile, symbol of the balance and serenity of a perfect being. The elongated lobes of the ears allude to the large earrings worn by members of the upper classes in India contemporary to Sakyamuni, and represent the concepts of greatness, nobility and wisdom. The bhumi sparsha mudra ('gesture of touching the Earth', being bhumi: 'the planet Earth'; and sparsha: 'to touch') represents the moment when Buddha solved the problem of ending suffering when he was under the Bodhi tree.
