Buff & Buff Cased Wye Level

A precision wye level surveying instrument manufactured from brass with a textured black finish. The telescope is supported by two Y-shaped uprights secured by hinged clips and is mounted above a long spirit level tube. The base features a four-screw leveling head and a brass horizontal scale graduated in degrees. The horizontal bar of the instrument is engraved with the manufacturer's name and location, Buff and Buff Mfg. Co. Boston, alongside the serial number 35528. The instrument is housed in its original mahogany wood case featuring finger-joint construction and green felt-lined interior blocks. A large paper instruction label is adhered to the interior of the lid titled The Most Precise Instrument Shop in the World and bears the company name Buff and Buff Manufacturing Company, Jamaica Plain Station, Boston, Massachusetts. The lid interior is also marked with handwritten ink reading Eye End to indicate correct packing orientation. The exterior of the box retains a diamond-shaped metal plate reading Buff and a rectangular adhesive dealer label for the B. K. Elliott Company, 536 Penn Avenue Pittsburgh, PA. 15222. The leather carrying strap is embossed with the text Buff No. 32332.
