Bwa buffalo mask Bobo Culture, Western Burkina Faso First half of the 20th century Wood and pigments Height: 80 cm - Width: 45 cm - Thickness: 25 cm (old restorations) Wooden face mask topped with a large pair of brown pigmented horns that merge to form a large openwork disc. The prominent muzzle is rectangular and slightly ajar. Its eyes are bulging, highlighted by two concentric brown circles on a white background. A symmetrical cross design occupies the entire face of the mask. It reflects the traditional body scarification of the Bobo people. The edges are pierced in order to hang the plant fibres that conceal the dancer's body. This dance mask appeared on the occasion of ceremonial rites.
